Nigredo

Nigredo

This is an ongoing interdisciplinary project which I began in Autumn 2025. It is a study and celebration of winter, of the dark, or going inward, of stillness, solitude and darkness. It feels like a call for balance in a world that can feel noisy, too bright and too busy and an opportunity for deep introspection and meeting emotions of, depression, fear, despair or grief. It also about finding poignant beauty in endings, decay, and loss. I have used charcoal, earth, ink, rotting stems and plants fibre from the places I have worked.

The team really know their stuff and worked us through some very interesting tools. We learned about the key mental health issues that might present to leaders, about the causes and how the brain reacts to those.

What was really special was developing and working through strategies to support people feeling unwell. Given the workshop focussed on common mental health issues and was focussed on working in the outdoors it was far superior and much more useful than the mental health first aid I’ve done so far. The course is suitable for all outdoor leaders and instructors.
