Environmental Arts Practice

My practice bridges ecopsychology and creativity, I explore the ways in which human beings are intertwined in cycles of the natural world. I cultivate intimacy with the natural world by gathering natural materials, earth pigment; soil, clay, rock and bone and then transforming them into art materials. I collect parts of trees and plants, as well as growing my own dye plants to make colour. This process is part utilitarian but also relational, these materials act as my teachers during the act of transformation, it is a collaborative act where we both have agency and are both changed.

Images emerge which are expressive and often symbolic, through which I hope to give voice to the materials as well as my own human experience. My final images are a footprint of a much deeper journey. Working with natural pigments feels like a counter-cultural act—a resistance against over-exploitation and mass production, a call to be slower and quieter. By hand-crafting materials from the earth, I transform art back into ritual, embracing a slower, ecological creativity. This process prioritises magic over utility and play over perfection, inviting us to be curious.

The course structure was fantastic, it really suited my love of nature and being outdoors. The benefits for my personal development are it has allowed me to express myself in ways that I have never done before. I have a greater understanding of the connectedness between nature and health. The course has enabled me to guide others into nature and I can see week by week the benefits of them developing their understanding of themselves and the connection they have with nature. It is evident that their well-being has improved.
